Bio-based Innovation is a term that in the last years has begun to make an appearance, especially in the design field. Before, terms such as biodesign and bio-innovation were frequently used, but as time evolves, new concepts continue to emerge.

As Europe strives to meet the goals they have outlined in the EU Green Deal and other policies and regulations, the future of bio- based innovation will be heavily influenced and/or impacted. As new solutions develop and emerge on the market, designers will have to clearly understand their product/ solution, as well as its life cycle. Those who plan on scaling ideas from research to industry will face many challenges, but also face exciting new opportunities that can incubate new business ideas.

The goal of this dimension is to provide insights into what bio-based innovation is, in addition to key aspects that can influence the development of bio-based innovations like the material, fabrication and novel methodologies. Additional literature can be found in the following chapters that dives deeper into certain concepts and case studies. With bio-based innovation becoming more prominent in the world of design, the field will continue to expand and more examples will emerge in the near future.
